ST. JOSEPH’S PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

SUNDAY APRIL 9, 2006

Attending: Rosemary Risse, Pete Konenkamp, John Timmons, Todd Story, Dana Moody,  Marguerita Tejeda, Evelyn Tejada, Father David McGuiness,  Father Dayro Rico

Not Present: Marty Ledenham, Susan Gearhart, Jim Atmiller, John Benca, Maxine Guerrara

Pete opened the meeting with a prayer.

Minutes from March were reviewed and approved.

PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS:  Two parish council members are needed for each mass to put out and collect ballots.  Dana has a sign up sheet.  We are still missing some info for the bulletin insert for some of the nominees.  A member for the parish council will make a pulpit announcement at each mass.  We will meet as a group to count votes on April 23 at 7:00 PM.  We will not conduct any business other than count votes. Read minutes here.

PLANNING / STEERING:  There is no news on the additional 5 or 10 acre parcels.  The plan is to proceed with the 30 acre plan to the planning commission.

ARCHITECT:  No report

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN:  No report

MAINTENANCE:  No report from Jim Atmiller but Father Dayro and David complimented Jim on how well the back yard looks. Jim, his wife, and all of the helpers Jim has requested have made the backyard very nice and inviting for the priests.  Thanks Jim!

FINANCE: No report.

LITURGY:  The Elijah Cup will start in June.  Sandy Vicaro will help make assignments to the parishioners taking the cup home.

LATINO UPDATE:  Fr. Dayro was present and gave an update on programs and services for the Latino population.  He summarized the items on the handout from Evelyn Tejada distributed last month.  He elaborated on the baptism process and requiring registration.  Previously, many people have brought children down from Winder and Gainesville because of the rules of church membership there.  We now require you be a member of the church for three months.  The point was raised that in churches in Mexico and Central America membership and registry are not required.  Marguerita asked if a brochure could be made outlining the differences in church rules in USA versus Mexico, etc.  A question was raised if we could have a spanish speaking Easter vigil at 10:00PM.  Fr. David and Dayro will discuss this. Marguerita suggested we see a DVD called “Dying to Live” about migrant workers.  Fr. McGuiness will purchase some for various parish ministries to view.

SOCIAL DIRECTOR:  Mary Beth Casso will send out letters to all ministries to introduce herself and ask how she can help.

SCHOOL: The school silent auction is April 23.  We discussed different ways to offer parishioner discounts to Parish families with children at the school.

BYLAWS:  The proposed bylaw change regarding process of parish council election was read for a second time.

NEW BUSINESS: There will be information sessions on April 22, 23 at mass (barring any steering committee changes) regarding the property and the current status.  There will be a neighborhood meeting at Iris Place on 4/23 at 2:00.

Pete and Father McGuiness brought up the growing issue of homeless people wanting assistance from the church.  While the church would like to help this population in some way, our current resources, staff and space do not allow us to do so.

We are making inquiries into the two houses behind the school for possible acquisition.

The parish is looking for a representative to attend the Eucharistic Congress in June.

The parish has hired a bookkeeper and is looking for a youth minister.

Father McGuiness closed the meeting with the Glory be…
